Homes & Interiors Scotland April 2002 One of the brightest stars in Edinburgh's realm of furniture design is Be Seated, a company established in the city's New Town by furniture restorer and upholsterer Peter Holmes. Peter's traditional furniture-making and upholstery skills are a result of almost twenty years of experience which began with his traineeship under the wing of a former tradesman of Waring and Gillow, the prestigious Lancashire furniture makers. Peter has produced furniture on a worldwide basis, having worked in such exciting locations as London, Melbourne, Sydney and Cape Town. A member of the Association of Master Upholsterers, each of his pieces is hand finished to the highest standard of craftmanship. From his New Town workshop Peter produces bespoke nineteenth and twentieth century furniture, but is finding that it is his more contemporary designs that are attracting most attention from Edinburgh's trendiest venues and home owners. Yet whilst cutting the contemporary edge, Be Seated strive to retain the quality inherent in traditional techniques, with stunning results. Take this traditional Victorian loveseat. A distinctly twenty first century approach has transformed a very traditional design into something rather special. While the basic structure echoes the Victorian loveseat, the curvaceously elegant line and form draws inspiration from more recent times. |

 This particular example shown here began life as a sketch on the back of an envelope just days after the birth of Peter and wife Fiona's baby son Charlie, who you might have spotted modelling in the picture with his dad. "The piece, finished in beige woollen fabric by Bute, was completed and on display in the workshop before mum and baby arrived home!" says Fiona. Peter wanted to have the seat finished before Charlie arrived home, aware he may have other things on his mind from that point onwards, and was keen to prepare the piece for an appearance on Scottish Television. "The loveseat is a good example of the service I can offer," says Peter. "Customers come in with a vague concept or a picture of a piece they are interested in and I can take these ideas from design and build to upholstering in high quality fabric to meet their own requirements. Aiming to create custom built designs with a timeless quality, not here today and gone tomorrow!" The Be Seated collection blends classic and contemporary styling with a finished look that transcends fashion and fads. Lovebird or not, you'll be pleased to hear that the Be Seated collection can be adapted to any living environment. Sorry baby not included.
