Upholstery Techniques

Introduction
At Be Seated our aim is to provide sound construction, individually tailoring our furniture using traditional craft skills and materials, while at the same time embracing modern techniques where appropriate.

Frames
Our frames are made from kiln dried beech obtained from sustainable sources. All joints are dowelled or mortised, corner blocks glued and screwed to provide a strong and long lasting frame (we don't use birch, chipboard or other sub-standard materials in our frames unlike many modern day manufacturers). We do use mahogany and oak in our show-wood frames to meet the customer's individual requirements. All exposed wood is French polished by hand and can be matched to the customer's colour requirements.

Springing
Each coil spring is stitched onto a jute webbed base. The springs are then hand tied to each other and ultimately fastened to the frame. All springing is covered with 10oz hessian and again tied in by hand. Coir fibre is used as a first stuffing, all scrolls and edges are stitched by hand in time-honoured tradition.

Stuffing
The top stuffing can be either coir or a pig bristle mix depending on the customer's requirements. A top layer of white cotton wadding is added before the application of the fabric.

Fabrics
Fabric is cut by hand and pattern matched if required. All cushions are overlocked to avoid fraying edges. Cushions are filled with the interior of your choice - feather, feather and down, fibre fill or foam (yes foam). Foam technology has moved on leaps and bounds over recent years and our foam cushions are Dacron wrapped to provide a most comfortable and long lasting seating system.

All fabrics are fire retardant to BS 5852 PART 1,BS 5852 PART 2,BS7176 crib 5 standard or used in conjunction with an interliner where required
